Pharmacy must overcome resistance to increasing its service offering if it is to survive, a senior Pharmacy Guild figure believes.

Speaking at an event in Melbourne today, Guild national president George Tambassis emphasised the importance of incorporating technology and adopting better services into community pharmacy.

Mr Tambassis spoke at the ‘Pharmacy Freedom’ event this morning, which featured the launch of Transpharmation, a multimedia pharmacy business guide by pharmacist Robert Sztar.

Mr Tambassis acknowledged that the Guild had “copped a bit of stick” from doctors in the media, with some claiming that pharmacists were “trying to become doctors” with the further expansion of services in pharmacies, including the ability for online claiming of remuneration for services.

He also said one of the most ground-breaking things the Guild did in 2014 was submit a pre-budget submission, linked to technological suggestions such as more services and programs that could be performed in pharmacies, using either the GuildLink software or other programs.

“We want to be at the forefront of the healthcare system in this country, and if that means we need to upset a couple of people, as you know, we usually don’t really worry too much about that,” Mr Tambassis said.

Mr Tambassis added that maintaining location rules for community pharmacies would remain a key part of the 6CPA.

The event was hosted by Mr Sztar’s company, Pharmactive, and was broadcast live through the company’s website and included access to a special live Google Hangout Q&A session.
